Roland Garros day 1

24 05 2010

Yesterday was the first day of the biggest clay court tournament of the year. At the women’s side it promises to be an interesting one this year with numerous candidates for the title. Title defender Kuznetsova is not one of them in my opinion, she did win her first round match petty easy though. Venus Williams had to play one of my favs, Patty Schnyder who really seems to be at the end of her career. She used to be very dangerous on clay, but only showed her extreme talent and feel for the ball sporadic in this match, losing 3-6 3-6. There were 2 upset yesterday. Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez, the winner of Rome 3 weeks ago and seeded 20th got injured during her warm up and lost 2 and 4 against the tallest woman on tour, Akgul Amanmuradova. Number 10 seed Viktoria Azarenka has been slightly injured as well but kept on playing the whole clay court season through resulting in being burned up here in Paris, losing to the always dangerous Gisela Dulko 6-1 6-2.
