Justine wins on the grass

20 06 2010

At the only dutch female tournament on the WTA tour, Justine Henin was the best of the field. The Belgian beat German Andrea Petkovic in an exciting finale. 6-3 3-6 6-4. The tournament in Rosmalen is one of only 4 tournaments on grass and a great preparation for Wimbledon. It is close to the Belgian border so most people watching were Belgians. The Netherlands had to play their second match at the World cup so most people were somewhere else. In Eastbourne Russian qualifier Makarova was the surprising finalist with wins over Pennetta, Petrova, Kuznetsova, Stosur and Azarenka in the final. A sign that on grass anything can happen. Tomorrow Wimbledon starts and I just had a look at the draw. My predictions for the round of 16 will be Serena Williams- Maria Sharapova, Na Li- A Radwanska, Wozniacki- Azarenka, Penetta(Rezai)- Stosur, Clijsters-Henin!!!, Wickmayer-Jankovic, Bartoli-Schiavone, Ivanovic-Venus Williams. I bet many will be wrong because that is the thrill of Wimbledon.

Roland Garros day 5

28 05 2010

Another rainy day and this time it was serious, very few matches were played. Today luckily the rain is gone and they have a heavy schedule to catch up ,but back to yesterday. Jankovic and Dementieva both had tough opponents in Kanepi and Medina Garrigues but they made it through after hard-fought battles. Champion of 2008 Ana Ivanovic got blown off the court by Alisa Kleybanova only winning 3 games. 8th seed Radwanska, 22 Zvonareva and 32 K. Bondarenko all lost their matches as well.. My fav Schiavone won, but both fashion queen Mattek-Sands and veteran Date Krumm lost unfortunately. Weird day…

Billie Jean King Cup at Madison Square Garden

2 03 2010

Yesterday night my boyfriend and I went to the BJK cup and it was pretty cool. Participants were Svetlana Kuznetsova, Kim Clijsters, Venus Williams and Ana Ivanovic. The only spoiler on the night were two fat african american lesbians that had their arms around each other and sometimes when I moved, I touched their arms that were way over the seat and one of them got pissed at me. Well, I got pissed right back at that bitch and only than she backed off. The tennis made up for it though, definitely the last 2 matches. The first one was between Kim Clijsters and Ana Ivanovic and that was not on a very high level, Kim won 7-6 but showed that she was rusty after a 6 weeks dry spell on the tour. Ivanovic showed at times the brilliance that made her number 1, but was often very sloppy. The second semis was between Venus Williams and Svetlana Kuznetsova. This match was very entertaining and both ladies played great. Venus just came from a 2-in-a-row tournament win and played very solid and proved to much in the end for Kuzzie, 6-4. After that there was some entertaining and the class of 2010 for the Tennis Hall of Fame were introduced and Ivan Lendl and John McEnroe were in attendance as well. As fellow viewers I saw David Duchovny with daughter who acted really cute together and Star Jones with entourage of obnoxious attention-drawing people. The final was between Kim and Venus and was pretty good, Venus won 6-4 3-6 7-5 in the end and got $400000 dollar, Kim $300000 and Kuzzie and Ivanovic each 250000 for 1 set of tennis. Not too shabby.

Australian Open day 4

21 01 2010

Today was not nearly as exciting of a day then yesterday but the top favorites easily cruising through. Serena Williams beat Petra Kvitova with 6-2 6-0 while playing a lot better than during the first round. Venus had it a little more difficult against Sybille Bammer but won 6-2 7-5. The only small upset came from Gisela Dulko who beat Ana Ivanovic 6-7 7-5 6-4. The match was of low quality and Ivanovic is not even close to the player she once was, all confidence is gone. She took a long break after the US Open to get back into great shape but so far it is not done much. Wozniacki, Zvonareva and Azarenka all won very easy and crow favorites Stosur and Dellaqua are also through to the third round.

Australian Open day 2

19 01 2010

Day 1 had a big upset and rain, day 2 as full of sunshine and no big upsets.

Both Serena and Venus Williams on easy in the first round. Serena beat Urszula Radwanska with 6-2 6-1 and Venus Williams beat Lucie Safarova 6-2 6-2. Venus is never at her best in Australia and Safarova can beat any play on a great day but today it was an error fest from Safarova. Venus did not play great but it was more than enough.  Serbian girls Ana Ivanovic and Jelena Jankovic also won in 2 easy sets both without playing great and I would be surprised if they turn out being title candidates at this year’s first slam. Seeds Razzano, Cibulkova(against americans King) and Medina Garrigues lost, but home favorites  Stosur and Dellaqua won their first round.

Belgian finale in Brisbane

8 01 2010

Who would have thought 18 months ago that the first finale of 2010 would be between Justine Henin and Kim Clijsters??. Kim obviously has already won the U.S Open last year so was kind of expected in the finals. For Justine though it was the first tournament since over 1.5 years. Both girls had a hard quarter-final, Henin beating Czink in a third set tiebreak and Clijsters beating Safarova in three sets but the semi final was much easier. Kim beat Petkovic in 2 easy set and she same happened for Justine against Ana Ivanovic. This will be the first time the girls meet since 2006. In the early stages of their career Kim usually came out of top, later it was Henin who mostly mentally was a lot stronger. This time I think(and hope) Kim will win because Justine is still a bit rusty at times. Both are right away big contenders for the Aussie Open title, if only they are not gonna be too tired after 2 pre tournaments.

US open day 2

2 09 2009

Agnes Szavay

Agnes Szavay

Day 2 had the same amount of seeds falling as day 1. Hungarian Agnes Szavay lost to Shahar Peer from Israel with 2-6 2-6. 2 years ago Szavay was a quarter finalist but since then a lot has changed. Peer is also a former quarter finalist, had 2 bad seasons and has found a little form this hard-court season. The fact that she beat Szavay was not a big upset, the easy score-line was though. Another woman desperately looking for her form is Ana Ivanovic. She lost yesterday against Katerina Bondarenko 6-2 3-6 6-7. Last year she was still the number 1 in the world at the US Open, this year she was not able to reach even 1 quarter final at a slam. Bondarenko is a tricky first round opponent but an Ivanovic in good form should win this in straight sets. Number 1 seed Dinara Safina played a horrible match in her first round against young Australian Olivia Rogowska. She won 6-7 6-2 6-4. Combined these ladies made 113 unforced errors against 38 winners. That says a lot about the quality. Rogowska was close to a 4-0 lead in the third set but crumbled under the pressure. Safina needs to pick it up against German Kristina Barrois, a woman with great hands and a unique technique in the next round if she wants to keep going.
