Wimbledon day 8

30 06 2010

Serena WilliamsIt was quarter-final day at the lady’s side and I was pissed by the end of it. What a huge chance for a Wimbledon final Kimmie threw away yesterday. Venus Williams was the first player to lose and it was big time 6-2 6-3. Tsveti Pironkova played outstanding and with slice forehands, loopy shot and great running she simply outplayed Venus. Venus was not in the best of form and you always assume she will bring it to Wimbledon but since the Billie Jean King Cup in the beginning of the year, Venus has not played that great. Kim Clijsters had to play Vera Zvonareva, I like both girls but Kim obviously more and she should have won that match. Yes, Zvonareva played great, dictated at the net and served fantastic, but Kim has never lost to Zvonareva and yesterday should not have been any different. Her serve and forehand really let her down. Serve is just not powerful enough and with the forehand she goes for too much. Zvonareva won 3-6 6-4 6-2. I really hope I am wrong but I doubt Kim will ever win Wimbledon. I think at the Australian Open and even Roland Garros her chances are bigger. Serena Williams had to play Na Li from China and this was a good match as well. Na Li is great on grass with her fast and flat shots and she stayed on course until 5-5 40-0 on her serve. She started to get heavy and nervous and made lots of mistakes to give Serena the break and basically the match. Li kept fighting but Serena kept bombing her first serves in and it was 7-5 6-3. Longest match and most even was that between Kaia Kanepi and Petra Kvitova. Kvitova beat both Azarenka and Wozniacki in straight set but she should have been beaten by Kaia Kanepi.Kanepi had 3 matchpoints in the second set but lost that in the tiebreak 8-10. In the third set it was all Kanepi again leading 4-0 and having 2 more match points but she choked it all away big time. Kvitova played good when it mattered but still, I hardly ever saw someone lose it like Kanepi. She can be proud for making it to the quarterfinals as a qualifier but Kanepi should have really won this match.

Australian Open final

30 01 2010

And a real finale it was between the two greatest tennis players of the last 10 years. Both incredible athletes but even more mentally real strong women. It was highly entertaining and in streaks also on a very high level. Until mid second set when Serena was leading 6-4 3-3, Serena mostly dominated the rallies but then Henin suddenly raised her level of play tremendously and breaked twice for a 3-6 win. Serena looked a bit defeated and took a toilet-break which did not seem to help with Justine leading 1-0 and she had 2 breakpoints in the second. Serena showed her strength then though and served her way to the victory with Justine running out of gas. A deserved winner but Justime is back and will be a contender for the rest of the slams this year.

Australian Open day 11

28 01 2010

The tournament gets a dream-final. Serena Williams against Justine Henin. So far Williams won more of their matches but Justine won more matches during slams, when it mattered. They have never been in the final of a slam against one another though, surprisingly enough.

Justine had it very easy against Jie Zheng. Zheng made hardly any winners and Justine played fantastic tennis. In just 51 minutes this match was already over. Cost Justine little energy and that was important because she mentioned this week that she was starting to become tired. Serena had a much tougher opponent today in Na Li. Williams seemed still tired from yesterday’s match and showed another sluggish performance. Li played pretty good and let Serena really work for it with pounding groundstrokes. But on the key moments Li made too many mistakes and Williams had that thunderous serve that made ace after ace. If both women bring their a or b game saturday it should be a great final. How fantastic would it be if Henin wins the title but I put my money on Serena. Betting against her almost always costs you money!

Australian Open day 10

27 01 2010

Both Williams sisters had to play their quarter finals match and while one of them won the other lost. It could have easily been 2 wins or 2 losses as well though, both matches were very tight.

Venus had to play Chin’s Na Li and proved once more she cannot bring her A-game to the Australian Open. So far in her career only one final and a few quarterfinals over here for V. That is with her calibre and the fact that it is not on clay very meager. Venus started well though and let Li make most errors and was leading 6-2 5-4 and was serving for the match when all of a sudden everything went downhill. The third set was just an error-fest with Li making less errors and winning 2-6 7-6 7-5. With Jie Zheng and Na Li china has 2 players in the final 4. Pretty amazing and surprising.

Serena played Vika Azarenka and was down a set and 4-4 in the second with Azarenka playing amazing tennis. This girl’s got game and she proved it again today. With rock hard groundstrokes she simply outplayed Serena who looked sluggish. But people counting out Serena were too soon because she came back with a vengeance and played superb tennis in the rest of the match and won 4-6 7-6 6-2. Azarenka did not even play bad in the third but it was all about Serena. Normally she should beat Na Li and the other 2 semi finalists fairly easy. Except for Justine who might have a small chance.

Australian Open Day 9

26 01 2010

Playing 2 matches in a row on a high level was more then Nadia Petrova could take, today against Justine Henin she played not too good at all. Henin played not at her best either so even though the latch lacked great rallies it was nerve-wracking. Henin won with 7-5 7-6 and is in the semi-finals at Melbourne again in her second tournament back!! Amazing stuff. She will play China’s Jie Zheng in the semi final. Zheng beat Maria Kirilenko 6-1 6-3. Kirilenko was injured and tired from playing singles, doubles and mixed ,but Zheng played great and I would not be super surprised if she beats Henin. Rooting for Henin though, also because Zheng is known as a spoiled bitch.

Australian Open day 8

25 01 2010

The sister Williams both made it to the final 8 but the way they did that could not have been more different. Serena played a superb match against Samantha Stosur and won 6-4 6-2. Stosur served very well but also hit a lot of balls on her frame and made too many errors that way. The great way Serena played this early in the tournament does bode well for her chances of winning. Venus played a terrible first set against one of the most entertaining and interesting players on tour, Francesca Schiavone. Schiavone played great and won 6-2. In sets 2 and 3 Venus played much more aggressive and made a lot less errors than in the first and the hard-hitting was too much for Fran. Venus won 6-3 6-1. Asian super star Na Li was too good for Caroline Wozniacki and won 6-3 6-4. Li was the star of the match making a lot more errors but also plenty of winners. Wozniacki made only 3 winners which is pretty pathetic for a top 5 player. If she really wants to become a top player she need to be more aggressive. Right now Vera Zvonareva and Viktoria Azarenka are playing and this match is great to watch. Very hard-hitting and great placement. I think both girls have to potential to become multiple slam winners except that the mental side for both is very fragile. Especially Zvonareva has been known to break down(literally crying) when it matters most. So far Zvonareva makes less errors and is leading 6-4 4-3. Last year Azarenka would have beaten Serena if she would have not gotten a heat stroke and it would be nice to see her getting revenge, but I like Zvonareva more.

Australian Open day 7

24 01 2010

My final 4 predictions can already go in the garbage after today, a good example that the Women’s Tour is much more surprising than the men’s side. One match ended by retirement though by Safina who injured her leg against Maria Kirilenko. Jie Zheng beat Alona Bondarenko and can make her second slam semi-final after reaching it at Wimbledon in 2008. The other 2 round 4 matches were way more interesting. The Belgian battle between Justine Henin and Yanina Wickmayer was on a very high level. The first set was for Henin with 7-6 after Wickmayer had setpoints. Second set was easily won by Wickmayer who played fantastic and made very few errors. Last set Henin played unbelievable though winning it 6-3. She is such a little fighter! Petrova beat the 3rd seat Kuznetsova 6-3 3-6 6-1. This is the first time since the spring of 2006 when she was unbeatable on the green and red clay that she won 2 matches against top players in a row. She was a big favorite for Roland Garros, but lost very early and since then she has been a head-case. Hopefully she can keep it together now for a change and win a deserved slam title. Kuznetsova made a lot of errors though so she handed it to Petrova.
