Kim Clijsters and Serena Williams break World Record

9 07 2010

A world record was broken yesterday during a tennis exhibition in Belgium. Kim Clijsters beat Serena Williams 6-2 6-3, while 35681 viewers watched in the King Boudewijn Stadium in Brussels. The match was umpired by Martina Navratilova. The previous record was set in 1973 between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs ,30472. Originally Henin was to play Clijsters, but she injured her elbow at Wimbledon. Serena had a foot problem so was not running optimal either, Fran Schiavone was there as a back-up. Also proves people love to watch women’s tennis.

Gay news, Supreme Court rules bigots be made public, European countries can decide on gay marriage themselves, Woman sues baptist church

25 06 2010

The highest court in the U.S, the Supreme Court, has ruled that the names of petition signers in Washington State Referendum 71 have to be made public. That means that people who signed an attempt to overturn a “pro gay” domestic partnerships law will be for all known as bigots. Conservatives tried to block the release of signatures fearing retributions, but all members of the court except for Clarence Thomas voted against them. Good news.

A High Court in Europe has ruled against 2 gays from Austria that wanted to get married. The court thinks the decision about marriage should be left up to the individual countries themselves and since there is a registered partnership in Austria that should be enough. As long the poor countries in Europe get their money from the Netherlands, Belgium and Scandinavia, they wanna have as little to do with our morals as possible and stay back in the Middle Ages.

An African-American woman sued her Covenant Baptist Church because they include gays and welcome same-sex unions. She says she gave$ 250.000 in past donations and wanted that back. She went to a gay wedding at the church just to see if it was real and she said it was disgusting. Now she dropped the lawsuit (because she had no chance in hell) and found herself a new bigot church. That from a woman who in her youth also was discriminated for being black. Unbelievable.

24 06 2010

A S&M club in a small town close to Antwerp, Belgium had a bizarre death. A 56-year old men died after having breathing problems and 2 S&M female masters have been arrested. The specialize in hard-core session, but this one might have gone too far!!!

Wimbledon day 1

22 06 2010

The first 2 hours Wimbledon started every match apart from Kim Clijsters’ easy win went against who I had hoped would win and by the end of the day my conclusion was not too positive. Two of my favorites, Patty Schnyder and Fran Schiavone lost. Schnyder sucks on grass and made only 2 games and Schiavone fought hard out there but had a very tough draw against Dushevina and the timing and rhythm were not there yesterday. She served horrible and that is deadly on grass. It must be hard after such an unexpected win at a slam to perform well in your next matches. The only other seeded player bowing out was Katerina Bondarenko. Henin, Bartoli and Venus Williams all won easy, so did my German favorite Kristina Barrois. I follow her quite interesting blog almost every day. Other favs Britain’s Elena Baltacha and Anna Lena Groenefeld from Germany lost as well yesterday. Best match of the day was Jelena Jankovic against 16-year old British talent Laura Robson. Robson played brilliant at times but Jankovic was too steady winning 6-3 7-6.

Justine wins on the grass

20 06 2010

At the only dutch female tournament on the WTA tour, Justine Henin was the best of the field. The Belgian beat German Andrea Petkovic in an exciting finale. 6-3 3-6 6-4. The tournament in Rosmalen is one of only 4 tournaments on grass and a great preparation for Wimbledon. It is close to the Belgian border so most people watching were Belgians. The Netherlands had to play their second match at the World cup so most people were somewhere else. In Eastbourne Russian qualifier Makarova was the surprising finalist with wins over Pennetta, Petrova, Kuznetsova, Stosur and Azarenka in the final. A sign that on grass anything can happen. Tomorrow Wimbledon starts and I just had a look at the draw. My predictions for the round of 16 will be Serena Williams- Maria Sharapova, Na Li- A Radwanska, Wozniacki- Azarenka, Penetta(Rezai)- Stosur, Clijsters-Henin!!!, Wickmayer-Jankovic, Bartoli-Schiavone, Ivanovic-Venus Williams. I bet many will be wrong because that is the thrill of Wimbledon.

Gay news, oldest US gay bar to close, Belgium gay Prime Minister, gay house burned down in Iraq

19 06 2010

A gay bar in Fairfield ,Connecticut that has been open for 71 years will be closing shop. The owner, 57, said the new landlords have doubled the rent and it is just not profitable anymore. He bought it in 1989 after going there since he was 21. Before the 70’s it was a refuge for gays and in the 70’s it was the center of gay life in the area. In the 80’s it was there during the AIDS crisis and also open to women and brought gays and lesbians closer together. For many young people it was the first gay bar they visited and it is a real shame it will be closing.

Belgium might get its first gay Prime Minister ,socialist di Rupo. The biggest Party though in the elections were not the socialists but the New Flemish Alliance, a party that wants to separate Flanders from Wallonia. They do wanna make a coalition with the socialists and that leader is french-speaking Di Rupo. Does not seem to make sense but the reasoning might be that making someone President that most Flemish people do not like makes the chance of a separation even bigger.Sort of a trap. I can kind of understand Flanders though. They are much richer and have to basically support the poor Walloniers. I mean who would you pick, Dutch people or French. That is basically the question.

Police has set fire on a house in Iraq where 2 gay men, a lesbian woman and 2 transgender people lived. The people living there were arrested and one might suspect that they are being tortured as we speak. Since the arrest of Saddam Hussein 720 LGBT were arrested and/or killed. Horrible.

Some fun to end the day. Every year there is a 7-day AIDS cycle ride through California to raise money for HIV/AIDS. I once saw a documentary about this and it is touching to see people with HIV, volunteer and other people work together to achieve fantastic goals. For a few guys the biking was not tiring enough and they made a very sweet clip for Katy Perry’s song “California Gurls.”

Tennis, Grass Court Season

16 06 2010

After a long clay season it is always fun to see how many early upsets there are in the second biggest grass court tournament of the year in Eastbourne. This year is no different. Yesterday and today in the first and second rounds Wozniacki, Petrova Pennetta and Roland Garros champ Schiavone lost. All did great at the clay of Roland Garros but showed playing on grass is something else. Kim Clijsters though, who came back after a few months of injury timeout, proved she is a class above the others just mentioned and beat fellow Belgian Wickmayer(with icy handshake by Wickmayer) and Safarova 6-1 6-1 and 6-1 6-0. Hope this is a good sign for Wimbledon for Kimmie.
