Olympics unfortunately over

1 03 2010

It were overall mediocre games with extreme sad lows like the death of the Georgian Luger, the death of Joanne Rochette’s mom and the at times very bad circumstances(trouble with the ice at the speed skating, conditions on the ski slopes) and highs with dutch golden medals, extremely tight/nerve-wracking races and Canada winning a record amount of golden medals. The overall medal count and deciding who the winner is, proves to be difficult. What is more important, the amount of medals overall or the most gold??. My bf and I decided to be fair, the gold was 5 points, silver 3 and bronze 1. That makes Canada the winner, before the U.S and Germany in third. ¬†Norway is a strong number 4 and then there is a big gap. Holland is in 10th, pretty good. My personal highlight were the gold of Mark Tuitert, Ireen Wust and the great performances of the German biathlon girls. Biggest disappointment the disqualification of Sven Kramer at the 10k and the miscommunications at the team relay that cost a sure gold.

Olympics day 9,openly lesbian Ireen Wust wins 1500m, another gold for Holland, biathlon

22 02 2010

After the beginning of this week for the speed skater at the Olympics were a little disappointing, since thursday everything changed majorly. 2 Gold, silver and bronze. Wust is a former olympic winner, world and european champion and came out last year. Her form the last 2 season was not always great but she brought it when it mattered most. I was hoping for a medal for her but did not expect gold. The favorite for me was Kristina Groves from Canada and she took home the silver. Martina Sablikova had a phenomenal last round and won the bronze. Wust’s race was perfection, fast opening and also a great last round. Margot Boer from the Netherlands was the number 4 and is pretty unlucky with a 4th, 6th, and 4th place. Both Canadian and Dutch TV pointed out her girlfriend and showed them hugging, NBC of course did not.

At the biathlon it was a great day for the German Girls at the Mass Start, my favorite race. Magdalena Neuner won her second gold medal and Simone Hauswald Denkinger won the bronze. In between them was Russia’s Olga Zaitseva.

Olympics day 4

17 02 2010

The speed skating did not go as planned today on the 500m for the ladies. In the first heat medal favorite Annette Gerritsen(cute and good) fell after having a great opening. Then the other great dutch short distance skater Margot Boer ended 4th. The worst place at the Olympics to have. Still she raced good so has a great tournament ahead at the rest of her distances. Winner was Sang-Hwa Lee from Korea who beat the two favorites Jenny Wolf and Beixing Wang. Korea has 2 gold and a silver so far with the speed-skating!

With the biathlon there was gold for Magdalena Neuner at the 10k pursuit. She was a little behind Kuzmina at the start but was very strong today, even 2 penalties did not stop her. Kuzmina won silver after Sundays gold. Another bronze was for France, this time Brunet. German Andrea Henkel had one of the quickest races of the day and came in 10th after starting as the number 27, even after 3 mistakes. Wilhelm and Hauswald were 12/16. Bryan Ferry from Sweden won gold at the men’s pursuit, before Christoph Sumann and Vincent Jay.

Olympics first day

13 02 2010

The first real day of the Olympics started with my favorite 2 sports. My number 1 is speed skating, as everyone in the Netherlands loves. I bet 1/2 of the country was glued to the TV today. And how great did it end, our hero and greatest dutch skater ever Sven Kramer won a gold medal at the 5k. He was good not as super as he sometimes is and had the disadvantage of skating the first of the favorites and having the pressure of the whole country on this shoulders, but it was more than enough to win in a time of 6.14.60. Lee from Korea surprisingly won silver in 6.16.95 and Skobrev from Russia bronze in 6.18.05. Dutch skaters De Jong and Blokhuijsen ended on the places 5 and 9. U.S  skaters Davis and Hedrick( religious freak, his twitters are ridiculous) ended in 12th and 11th place.

With Biathlon ,which is as popular in Germany as Speed Skating in the Netherlands, I am always rooting for the German girls and they did except for pin-up cutie Magdalena Neuner not too good. Neuner won silver though behind former Russian and now Slovak Irina Kuzmina. A huge surprise was french girl Marie Dorin who won bronze. Other germans Hauswald, Henkel, Wilhelm did not end in the final 20 which will be a huge disadvantage for the next event, the pursuit, where everyone starts in the order they ended this 7.5K sprint.
