A world record was broken yesterday during a tennis exhibition in Belgium. Kim Clijsters beat Serena Williams 6-2 6-3, while 35681 viewers watched in the King Boudewijn Stadium in Brussels. The match was umpired by Martina Navratilova. The previous record was set in 1973 between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs ,30472. Originally Henin was to play Clijsters,¬†but she injured her elbow at Wimbledon. Serena had a foot problem so was not running optimal either, Fran Schiavone was there as a back-up. Also proves people love to watch women’s tennis.

Clijsters and Henin try to break record

23 04 2010

On July 8 the 2 Belgian stars will compete in the King Boudewijn-stadium in Brussels against one another and try to break the world record for most visitors at a tennis match. The record is now 30.472 visitors when Billie Jean King played Bobby Riggs in the battle of the sexes back in 1973 in the U.S. Billie will be the referee. Sounds super cool

Clijsters and V.Williams in Miami finals

2 04 2010

Kim Clijsters won a nerve-wracking and poorly played semis against Justine Henin 6-2 6-7 7-6. They both hit tons of errors but nonetheless made it a spectacle just like in Brisbane at the start of the season where Kim also won the third set tiebreak. Both Belgian girls came from a bad showing at Indian Wells where they both lost early and made up for that in the earlier rounds here, Clijsters beating Azarenka and Justine beating Dementieva and Wozniacki. Henin was taking anti-inflamatories for a backmuscle strain that made it a little harder for her. She is a fighter. Great for Kimmie beating that little fighter though for the second time in a row, hopefully she owns Justine now. Venus has been having a great last few weeks, 2 tournament wins in a row, winning the Billie Jean King cup and now in the finale of the huge tournament in Miami. She did not play Indian Wells, because the Williams sisters think they were not being treated properly there in the past. In the semis venus beat Marion Bartoli from France, 6-3 6-4

Billie Jean King Cup at Madison Square Garden

2 03 2010

Yesterday night my boyfriend and I went to the BJK cup and it was pretty cool. Participants were Svetlana Kuznetsova, Kim Clijsters, Venus Williams and Ana Ivanovic. The only spoiler on the night were two fat african american lesbians that had their arms around each other and sometimes when I moved, I touched their arms that were way over the seat and one of them got pissed at me. Well, I got pissed right back at that bitch and only than she backed off. The tennis made up for it though, definitely the last 2 matches. The first one was between Kim Clijsters and Ana Ivanovic and that was not on a very high level, Kim won 7-6 but showed that she was rusty after a 6 weeks dry spell on the tour. Ivanovic showed at times the brilliance that made her number 1, but was often very sloppy. The second semis was between Venus Williams and Svetlana Kuznetsova. This match was very entertaining and both ladies played great. Venus just came from a 2-in-a-row tournament win and played very solid and proved to much in the end for Kuzzie, 6-4. After that there was some entertaining and the class of 2010 for the Tennis Hall of Fame were introduced and Ivan Lendl and John McEnroe were in attendance as well. As fellow viewers I saw David Duchovny with daughter who acted really cute together and Star Jones with entourage of obnoxious attention-drawing people. The final was between Kim and Venus and was pretty good, Venus won 6-4 3-6 7-5 in the end and got $400000 dollar, Kim $300000 and Kuzzie and Ivanovic each 250000 for 1 set of tennis. Not too shabby.
