Gay news, Castro shooting, first presidential gay marriage, gay domestic violence by former Minnesota Viking

28 06 2010

During Pink Saturday in SF’s Castro a man shot 3 people during the kick-off of the Gay Pride festivities. It happened at the corner of Market and Castro in front of  The Cafe at 11pm. A 19-year old man was killed and a man and woman injured. The suspect, another 19-year old man was taken into custody. I used to walk there everyday, so scary and sad…

Icelandic Prime Minister Sigurdardottir married her partner at the same day gay marriage became legal in Iceland yesterday. They already had a registered partnership since 2002. This makes her next to being the first gay Prime Minister ever also the first head of state  to have a same-sex marriage.

That gays are no different from straight people unfortunately also goes for domestic violence. Former Minnesota Viking and out gay man since 2002, Esara Tuaolo, was arrested last week for domestic assault and 3 misdemeanors. He was released on bail but given a no-contact order with the victim. There are not many high-profile same-sex domestic violence cases on record, so I am curious how this pans out and if it becomes a landmark case.

Gay news, Malawi president, store for butch lesbians, only in SF!!, ex-gay??!!

22 06 2010

The President from Malawi urges organizations to not focus on gay rights anymore but only on children’s rights. Why help confused people when you can help children he says. Why not both is my reaction. Just because he hates gays does not mean one excludes the other.

Self-described butch lesbian Shaz Riley has launched “the Butch Clothing Company,” a fashion line specifically aimed for Cynthia Nixon’s gf and gals like her who like to look manly. It makes the bust line smaller and reduces the crotch tenting, something that happens to girls like Shaz when they shop at men’s stores. Shaz says they do not wanna be men, but they just do not like wearing female clothing.  I love a butch gal.

To fight the oil spill and save the gulf wildlife , the gays in my favorite neighborhood in the world, the Castro in SF have come up with something only they can. Pairs of muscled men only in their underwear wrestled to collect money. Volunteers took turns commenting the matches in hilarious ways and asked for donations from the crowd. Apparently it was quite the spectacle.

This “lady” is seriously trying to convince people she is not gay anymore since God saved her. This must be a parody, but I think it is not.

Gay news, Expedia opens gay store, Harvey Milk dayMoscow Pride satanic, Gay blood ban

22 05 2010

Travel site Expedia.com has opened a Gay Travel Store on their website since yesterday on http://www.expedia.com/daily/gaytravel/default.asp. They partner with International Gay&Lesbian Travel Association to help find and identify gay-friendly hotels all over the world. I just had a look and it is pretty cool except for the fact that with hotels in for instance NY or Amsterdam I do not understand why some hotels are listed as gay-friendly and others not…. What qualifies as being gay-friendly? I probably keep (small)luxury hotels of the world as my number 1 but this might be a good alternative.

Today is the first Harvey Milk Day. It is only an official holiday in California but all over the U.S there are parties and events. As most of you know he was the first elected openly gay official in the U.S and was killed shortly after. People that do not know the importance of Harvey, should watch the movie Milk or one of the documentaries made about his life. Celebrations in his beloved Castro neighborhood will be biggest but also in LA, San Diego and NY marches and events for equality will be held. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will kick off a fundraiser in SF on Market Street. Yesterday she promised DADT would be over by the end of the year. Hope she can keep her promise. Below Milk Screenwriter Dustin Lance Black about the importance of Harvey Milk.

For the 5th year in a row Moscow Gay Pride was banned by Mayor Yury Luzhkov. According to him it is satanic and he will do everything to stop the event May 29. Moscow authorities have also blocked the website promoting the pride, GayRussia.Ru. How democratic.

There might come an end to the FDA approved ban on gays giving blood donations. The Department of Health and Human services wants to hear presentations and engage in deliberations on the topic. Since september 1985 men who had sex with men(even once) were not allowed to donate. This change would be about time, there are tons of monogamous gay men who are HIV-negative and can donate.

GLBT News; sex change tax- deductible, cops abuse gay witness, Dolores Park in SF closes for 2 years

4 02 2010

A sex change will be tax-deductible. The tax court decided that treatment for gender identity disorder is real medical care instead of cosmetic care. Surgery and hormone therapy can be written off now. Great decision and only fair.

Cops in Miami Beach have harassed a gay man who witnesses them abusing a suspect. Luckily for him he was on the phone with 911 when the cops came at him, hurling anti-gay words. They later on grabbed his phone and said: ” We know what you are doing, we are sick of all the fags here. Then they pushed him on the ground and tied his hands while hurling more insults. The cops are still on duty while this is investigated. Cops are your best friend!!

The famous Dolores Park in San Francisco is going to be closed for 2 years while getting a $12 mil renovation starting in august. The park is close to the Castro and nicknamed the gay beach(even though there is no sea there) Many gay folks lay there during the warm summer days, me included a few year back. Always liked it there.

44 people injured after metros collide in San Francisco

19 07 2009

4 of them are critically injured after 2 light rail transit cars had a collision. One of the conductors miscalculated a turn and bumped into another standing one . The accident happened in the west of the city around the Castro station. My boyfriend and I used to live in the Bay Area for years and I love that city. More even then New York. The Castro was my daily hangout. Good thing nobody got fatally injured.
