Gay news,U.S district court thinks DOMA unconstitutional, HIV vaccine breakthrough, U.K supreme court/asylum, Helsinki Gay Pride arrests

9 07 2010

A U.S district court in Boston has ruled that section 3 of DOMA is unconstitutional. It is an enormous victory for same-sex marriage. In both Commonwealth of Massachusetts vs Health and Human Services as well as Gill vs Office of Personnel Management, Judge Tauro thinks DOMA violates equal protection principles. Great news!!

U.S government scientists have discovered 3 powerful antibodies against the HIV virus. The strongest neutralizes 91% of all cells!! More than any before. The cells were found in an African-American gay man who had the cells naturally. Researchers screened 25 million of his cells to find 12 that produced antibodies. Unfortunately it will be years before this can be used on people, still very good progress.

The U.K Supreme Court has decided that gay couple who fear retribution in their home countries have a right for asylum in the U.K. The decision involved 2 men from Iraq and 1 from Cameroon. Lord Hope said that to compel a homosexual person to deny their sexuality is to deny them a fundamental right to be who he is. Well said. Lord Roger said that just as male heteros are free to enjoy rugby, beer and talking about woman with their male friends ,gays should be allowed to listen to Kylie ,drink exotic coloured cocktail and talk about boys with their girlfriends. A little ridiculously stereotypical but I guess he meant good.

Last weekend it was Helsinki Gay Pride. Three men decided to ruin the fun and used pepper spray and smoke bombs. Over 30 people were hit by it and also some children. Nobody was injured but the men have been charged with a hate crime and Finnish president Tarja Halonen denounced the attack.

Gay news, Day against Homophobia/kiss-in/marriage anniv. in Massachusetts, Rekers’ evil past, proud homophobe cut from oil spill team, gay love-story soldier in Iraq

18 05 2010

Yesterday was the international day against homophobia. Around the world activists, groups and others were campaigning for more tolerance. There was a (surprisingly) violent-free demonstration in Kingston, Jamaica and kiss-ins all over the world. It was also the sixth anniversary of gay marriage in Massachusetts. And the world still exists..

The self-hating George Rekers is now just basically known as a joke but he did some pretty evil things in the past. Back in 1974 he already had ex-gay programs in which parents were instructed to “spank away the gay” in their kids. As young as 4 years old the mothers were instructed to look away from the child when it was playing with girly things, until the kid started crying. At home the kids received red chips for feminine behavior and blue chips for masculine. The blue chips meant candy and TV, the red chips meant a spanking. In one instance a kid “manned up” after 2 years and Rekers used this as an example for his theory. At 18 the boy committed suicide…

The Energy Department did not waste any time in dumping Jonathan Katz from the panel to deal with the oil spill. Katz said in an article he is a proud homophobe and blames gay people for the death of other people who contracted AIDS, “they died so the sodomites could feel good about themselves.” Good news, I know his views on homosexuality have nothing to do with the oil spill, but extreme bigots like that do not deserve anything imo.

The brothers Larry and Andy Wachowski, creators of the hit-movie series The Matrix, just finished writing a script about a gay relationship between a U.S soldiers and an Iraqi. Seems very interesting..

Gay news, Elton John, Rekers/Attorney General McCollum, kid refused because of lesbian moms

13 05 2010

Elton John is not allowed to sing at a music festival in Egypt may 18 because they do not want people who are gay and anti-religion there. Elton has been critical of the middle east and said people were still unsafe while being out as gay there(true). In Morocco they also wanted him banned. The Islamic Party said he would encourage homosexuality there but the organizers say he is there not because of his sexuality but for his singing qualities. If I would be him I would not even go there in the first place.

George Rekers,( of the rentboy scandal) was paid $120K to testify against gay adoption in Florida back in 2009. The person that recommended him(urged to hire him) in a letter is the Attorney General of the state Bill McCollum. He was paid with tax-payers money and now the people from Florida demand the $120K be paid back, either by McCollum himself or his campaign fund. McCollum is running for Governor now and of course wants this scandal to go away as quick as possible.

The Massachusetts elementary school St Paul has refused to accept a little boy because he has 2 mommies. On of the moms says she is accustomed to discrimination because of her being a lesbian of a certain age but did not expect this against her child. The school said her relationship is against the teachings of the catholic church and teachers would not be prepared to answer question about sexuality. How pity is this, 2 days in a row I have to report about kids being the victim of bigots. Just tell children some kids have 2 moms or 2 dads, done. Kids do not care as long as their parents tell them that it is ok. There might be some teasing but that also happens about kids with red hair and fat kids. You do not forbid those people to get kids either.

Politics, Kagan Supreme Court, The Netherlands, Red families against blue families

12 05 2010

After  a lot of speculating in that direction Obama nominated Elena Kagan as new Supreme Court nominee. I like that she is a woman, to even out the ratio in the court but on issues I care about I dunno yet how good she will be. There are rampant rumors she is lesbian and both sides want her to come out. The religious right to use it against  her on gay issues(they don’t think it is fair she can vote on gay issues, how ridiculous is that), the left because they are afraid it will compromise her voting just to prove a point. So far we know she is against DADT but also that she does not necessarily think gay marriage is a constitutional right but a matter of political process. Not good for marriage equality cases.

New Government Elections in the Netherlands are being held on June 9 and the Dutch Labor Party(PVDA) wants to have to the right for christian school to not hire a gay teacher removed. Officially schools cannot discriminate but under European law they can make up their own professional demands. I will not vote PVDA but I do like this initiative.

Cultural conservatives often condemn the loose moral values and lifestyles of cities like San Francisco. But if you wanna find stable 2 parents families and well-treated kids you have a bigger chance finding them in SF then in “Palin- Country.” The country’s lowest divorce rate is in the original home state of gay marriage Massachusetts. Blue(democratic) states have far lower divorce rates and teen pregnancies then red states. Very interesting! “Family values” might be bad for families!

Gay marriage news;same-sex marriage in the Netherlands, marriage equality vote cancelled again in NY, Age very important for gay marriage

11 11 2009

The New York Times has an interesting article about how same-sex marriage has worked in the Netherlands. It has been legal since 2001 here, so there is enough time to see what impact it had on society. First of all there is no evidence that same-sex marriage changed how heterosexuals saw their marriage, an argument often used by anti-gay people in the U.S. I talked to my parents about this and they could not understand how people could say that in the U.S. Those people must not be secure about their own marriage was what my mother said, my parents were really stunned about this argument. The only thing that has changed in the Netherlands is how straight people see gay couples. They encourage gay couples to get married and think they should get married now that they have the opportunity. Unfortunately some states in the U.S are more than 20 years behind.

For the second time a promised marriage equality vote was not held in Albany New York yesterday. This summer it was promised by Patterson and senate and last week as well, but it has been postponed until 16/17 november. The Senate promised (again) they would vote on it this year. I am starting to have my doubts, they are so flaky over there.

According to some statistics it will only be a matter of time though before there is gay marriage in the U.S. Younger people 18-29 are in all but 12 states already in favor of gay marriage. In states like Massachusetts, Vermont and Rhode Island those younger people are in favor between 70-75 %. People over 65 are only for 30-35% in favor of it. In the worst states like Utah, Mississippi and Alabama there is still a long way to go though. Young people favor gay marriage 30% and 65+ favor it with only 10%.

Gay news; Johnny Weir; gay marriage saves straight marriage, anti-gay Rome

5 09 2009

Openly gay figure skater Johnny Weir, a medal winner at the World Championships last year and a big contender to be part of the American team for the Olympics this year had this to say about suggestions to “butch up” men’s figure skating. He thinks it’s a ridiculous idea because he loves the glittery costumes, getting his hair and make-up done and his prettiness. Hard to argue with that!! haha

You constantly hear anti-gay marriage supporters saying that gay marriage destroys their straight marriage. Well, after 5 years of legalized gay marriage in Massachusetts, the state’s divorce rates have plummeted to pre World War 2 numbers. And they have the lowest divorce rate in the country. So basically gay marriage saves opposite marriage!!

Anti-gay violence has increased in Rome a lot in recent months. This week escalating in the throwing of 2 bomb letters in a bar in the gay neighborhood of Rome. Several people were injured and one had to be taken to the hospital. Many people including the mayor of Rome are worried about this trend. One former PM goes as far as to say Rome is not a safe city for gay people anymore. Such a pity of a great city. I have to say that I did not notice anything anti-gay about Rome while I was there with my boyfriend but maybe the climate has changed in a few years.

Gay news

9 07 2009

Two men in a Mexican restaurant in El Paso were ejected and verbally assaulted by other customers and staff after kissing. The police came and told them it was illegal in Texas for 2 men or women to kiss in public and could be cited with homosexual conduct. Ridiculous that states in the US still have those rules. What about anti-discrimination laws.

From august 1, gay couples in Wisconsin can have many of the same rights of heterosexual married couples in that state by forming a legal domestic partnership. While it’s not total equality, this is probably now as good as it gets over there.

And Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakly filed a lawsuit challenging the federal government for denying equal benefits to citizens of her state under DOMA. Well done!! Hopefully she wins.
