Gay news, gay couple holds kiss-in at restaurant, Mark Kirk outed, first gay marriage Portugal, nude transgenders in Delaware

7 06 2010

A gay couple from Chicago were discriminated at restaurant La Fiesta Azteca last month for holding hands and kissing a few times. The owner asked them to leave citing his religious beliefs and the fact the restaurant was family friendly. They did not wanna pay because they did not finish their food but the owner demanded their money. Yesterday 100 people had a kiss-in at the restaurant to protest this. While I think it is not necessary to be super affectionate in a family restaurant for anyone, gay or straight this had solely to do with the fact these man were gay and then it is something to protest against indeed.

Mike Rogers is an outing blogger that has a 100% success rate in his outings so far. This time he is going after Mark Kirk, an Illinois Republican. Kirk has voted numerous times against gay right and denied he is gay himself, saying people only think so because he got divorced. No mr Kirk, people think so because a purse falls out of your mouth every time you open it and because 2 men have claimed to have had sex with you and Rogers met you and saw you interact with gay men on a specific way. Even though I could not understand a life in the closet I think it is fine as long as you are not a closeted homophobe.

Today the first gay marriage in Portugal was sealed. Two divorced women in their 30’s that have been together since 2003 tied the knot in Lisbon. As a result of a decision in April by the president and parliament Portugal follows the Netherlands, Belgium, Norway, Sweden, Spain, South Africa and Canada in making same-sex marriages legal. And lives have not changed that much in those countries since.

At Rehoboth Beach in Delaware several transgender women in the process of becoming full women removed their tops while sunbathing. After complaints patrol came and asked them to cover up and after first refusing eventually they agreed, but they were pissed.Women are not allowed to show their breast which I think is stupid but that is the rule. So the transgenders should follow suit and act like ladies and cover up. I mean you wanna become a woman or not??

10 most over-hyped things to do in NYC

15 05 2010

The travel site concierge made a list of things that you should not do in NYC. I have done all and do not agree with most of it.

1 Hansom Cab Ride through Central Park. Love it. Great way to see the park quickly.

2 Dining at Tavern on the Green. Does not even exist anymore, food was not great, atmosphere was.

3 Eating on Times Square. Love Ruby Foo’s, W Hotel restaurants.

4 Comedy Shows on Times Square. Saw Mario Cantone at Caroline’s, was a lot of fun.

5 Shopping at Century 21. BF does not like it, but my sister bought a fabulous expensive coat for a lot less there.

6 Nightclubbing in Meatpacking District. Did it with my girlfriends to straight clubs. Not too bad, not great either though.

7 Pedicabs through Midtown. Expensive but fun

8 Eating from a hot dog-cart. Cheap and fairly tasty.

9 Visiting Empire State Building. The line is enormous sometimes and then it is not worth it but other days it is only 10 minutes and then it is fantastic.Empire State view

10 Cupcakes at Magnolia Bakery. Maybe  a bit over-hyped but petty damn tasty nonetheless.

Brussels

3 05 2010

Last weekend me and my boyfriend made a trip to the beautiful capital of Belgium. Even though it is my neighboring country and I have been all over Europe, strangely enough I had only visited Brussels twice before at night, to party. From Amsterdam it is only 1.5 hours with the Thalys and it really feels very different from Holland. The first night I was alone because my hubby was still on his way through Europe to get to Brussels(it was the week after the start of the volcano trouble).I walked over the magnificent Grand Place with numerous intriguing century old buildings. Lots of gold and amazing details. Then a quick bite to eat at a brasserie, duck in a beer broth and later on some of the best ice-cream I ever had, with a gingerbread flavor. After that I had a quick walk though the gay area of Brussels, which was fun. Lots of flirting going on, always good for the ego. I definitely miss that from NY, here where I live in the Netherlands I go weeks without seeing many gays(or none at all) sometimes. Our hotel was the luxurious Rocco Forte Amigo where the beds were very comfortable. Next morning I finally saw my boyfriend and it always feels extra great to see each other after a longer absence. We got some coffee, soft-drinks and sandwiches at a nice little bakery in the sun and planned the rest of our day. First we did some shopping and bought a cool retro orange/black messenger bag for myself and a new digital camera. We had lots of pictures so shoot and nothing to do it with at the time(2 of them are in NY) so it was a necessity. Then it was time for lunch already and we went to a small place recommended by the concierge of the hotel and it was phenomenal. My boyfriend had the best casserole with lots of meat and beans he ever had( and he had a lot) For myself there was rabbit rillette as a starter and sole in a creamy sauce for my main. After that it was off for a long walk to burn some calories, through the picturesque city center. Beautiful churches, pedigreed lawns/parks and the palace of the Belgian royal family. Not as pretty as the British one but still worth seeing. At night we had reservations at a 2-star Michelin restaurant. That means in general for foodies like us a good time but this was one of the most mediocre Michelin star restaurants we ever ate. The amuses were uninspiring, the fish-sauce too fat and the sweetbreads a bit bland. The silverware was very chic as was the interior but the service was not up to par while they were pretending to be very formal. Empty glasses were not filled on time and the bottles were out of reach for us, napkins were not refolded after toilet visits nor did people get any assistance sitting down. Don’t get me wrong the food was ok and some of the formalities are not important to me at all, but expectations from a 2 star are pretty big. We had a great night together nonetheless The next day the weather was again very nice (sunny and 70’s) and after a nice breakfast at one of the many outside cafe’s surrounding the Grand Place we thought it was time for some culture and went to 2 museums. The first one was a beer museum, perfect for my beer-loving boyfriend. The showed how some of the famous Belgian beer was brewed in the past and present and it ended with a tasty local beer. Not too shabby huh? Belgium is famous for his comic books and I read many of them as a kid. The cartoon-museum featured some of my favs like Suske and Wiske and Tintin but I expected a bit more. It is worthwhile for families but I would not recommend it for only adults. Then we walked fo another hour or so, bought some of the famous Belgian chocolate for family and had a farewell lunch at out spot from saturday afternoon. Another hearty feast was served and eaten to the last little crumb. All in all I would totally recommend people to visit Brussels, maybe in combination with the medieval beauty Brugge for a long weekend.

El Bulli no longer number 1 restaurant, now it’s NOMA

28 04 2010

It was a huge surprise that first place from the S Pellegrino World’s best restaurants went to the Danish eatery NOMA, located in Copenhagen. The winner of the most prestige food award is picked by over 800 restaurateurs, chefs and food writers from all over the world and El Bulli from Spain on years in a row and now was number 2 just for The Fat Duck from the UK. My boyfriend and I are big foodies and were curious to see to how many places in the top we have been too. Let’s say we still have a long way to go. We ate at number 8 Daniel and number 15 Le Bernadin both in NYC. Then number 34 Aqua in Germany and my personal favorite The Librije in Zwolle, the Netherlands ranked 37. Then number 52 Jean Georges and 57 De Karmeliet in Brugge. Another favorite of us Enoteca Pinchiorri in Florence ended up at place 87. The chef from the Librije, Jonnie Boer was on TV yesterday and he as very happy with his place 37, I think he deserves even more. On saturday night the restaurant is booked until July 2011. Luckily we always go on a different day!

Gay dog or guide dog?

26 04 2010

A blind man wanted to get a bite to eat in a chinese restaurant in Adelaide, Australia. He explained he needed his guide dog but the waiter understood gay dog and denied him entry. He thought the dog was castrated to become gay! and did not want that in their restaurant. The man sued and got 1500 dollar.

(Gossip) news; Cheryl/Ashley Cole heading for divorce, Johnny Weir/Evan Lysacek, Hayden Panettierre boob job, Paula Deen on American Idol

17 02 2010

Cheryl Cole, singer of Girls Aloud, and her soccer star husband Ashley are heading for divorce. Last year there were already rumors that he was cheating on her and this week the news leaked out that he send naked pics of himself to other women. He says someone else did it but the other Girls loud singers as well as Cheryl’s mother think they should divorce. They are one the THE glamour couples in Britain and this is their Tiger Woods’ affair. I saw them once eating in the Blue Elephant restaurant in London and she is one of the prettiest women I have ever seen.

It was quite the spectacle yesterday at the men’s short program figure skating but for me it was all about Johnny Weir. Some other guys might have better technical elements but no one can put on a show like Johnny. He wore an outfit with self-described “man cleavage and pink ruffle” with a bit of lace and is just himself on the ice unlike a guy like Evan Lysacek who over-acts to be pursued as masculine. The two of them are arch-nemises since their early teens and could not be more different. Johnny ended 6th and will be in the final group at the long programme and said to be looking out of the corner of his mascara to see who would win on thursday, likely between Lysacek and extremely talented and extremely ugly Plushenko. He might prepare the same for the event as he did on Tuesday, being naked watching The Real Housewives!

Actress Hayden Panettiere(Heroes) got a boob job recently and went from an A-cup to a C. She hopes to get more grown-up roles now than only playing cheer leaders. I think it is a good thing, her body used to look like that of a 12-year old gymnast, not pretty.

My favorite cook and TV personality Paula Deen will be on American Idol as a guest judge. While I kinda understand that some people think she knows nothing about singing and should not be a judge I disagree about the last part. She is funny and a down-to-earth Southern Belle, she knows exactly what America wants and became an Idol herself. Solely singing qualities does not make you a star.

Overheard

19 12 2009

Yesterday while dining at the fabulous Morimoto restaurant in New York.

24-year old fairly cute tiny girl to her mother(most ridiculous whiny baby voice): “You don’t know what love is mom. You never loved dad. I don’t want a fat slob as a man, look at me I am on a 1000 calorie-a-day diet. Besides, dad is a psychopath.I never wanna see him again and do not want him to meet my future children.” And this was just one of the many ridiculous things she said yesterday night….

WTF!!!!!!
