Gay news, Gay Rights ranking Europe, Zimbabwe arrests, John McCain and the gays

26 05 2010

The International Gay and Lesbian Association has released its Rainbow Europe County Index on how legislation affects LGBT people. Sweden is number 1 followed by Belgium, the Netherlands, Norway and Spain. Those 4 have anti-discrimination laws not enshrined in the constitution, like Sweden(but they do mostly use it) From the EU, Cyprus, Latvia and Poland not good and finished last. From non EU countries Turkey, Russia and Ukraine did bad.

Two members of a Zimbabwe Gay organization have been arrested. At first the government and police said it was because of drugs and porn but yesterday it was made clear they got a letter from former SF mayor Brown that was critical about that monster of a President Mugabe. Mugabe described gays as less than pigs and dogs. The 2 men are still in jail, hopefully unharmed…

Senator John McCain is anti gay marriage, opposes gay adoption, against gays in the military and against ENDA(discrimination against gays in workplace). On the other hand his wife has been a vocal supporter of gay marriage, his daughter is super pro-gay and now he hired a gay man, Mark Buse to run his campaign for re-election of Senator from Arizona. He should listen to his inner circle more.

NY Pride will be shorter than ever in a cost-cutting measure by the NYPD. It will go from 36/5th instead of 52/5th but still ends in Christopher Street. Apparently the same thing will happen to all parades in NY. I think it is totally fine, more crowd on a denser area and less to walk for the marcher in the (maybe) heat.

Roland Garros day 2

25 05 2010

There were definitely less surprises yesterday than the day before. Serena started a little slow against youngster Voegele from Switzerland, but picked up her pace in the end of the first set winning 7-5 6-2. Wozniacki, Dementieva and Jankovic all lost less than 5 games in their matches and outsider for the titleDementieva, Australian Sam Stosur won 7-5 6-1 against tricky Simona Halep. One of my favorites Kristina Barrois from Germany who made her first WTA tour final this weekend in Strasbourg lost against Tatiana Garbin in 3 sets after having 3 match points in the second. Heart-breaking for her.

Gay news, Expedia opens gay store, Harvey Milk dayMoscow Pride satanic, Gay blood ban

22 05 2010

Travel site Expedia.com has opened a Gay Travel Store on their website since yesterday on http://www.expedia.com/daily/gaytravel/default.asp. They partner with International Gay&Lesbian Travel Association to help find and identify gay-friendly hotels all over the world. I just had a look and it is pretty cool except for the fact that with hotels in for instance NY or Amsterdam I do not understand why some hotels are listed as gay-friendly and others not…. What qualifies as being gay-friendly? I probably keep (small)luxury hotels of the world as my number 1 but this might be a good alternative.

Today is the first Harvey Milk Day. It is only an official holiday in California but all over the U.S there are parties and events. As most of you know he was the first elected openly gay official in the U.S and was killed shortly after. People that do not know the importance of Harvey, should watch the movie Milk or one of the documentaries made about his life. Celebrations in his beloved Castro neighborhood will be biggest but also in LA, San Diego and NY marches and events for equality will be held. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will kick off a fundraiser in SF on Market Street. Yesterday she promised DADT would be over by the end of the year. Hope she can keep her promise. Below Milk Screenwriter Dustin Lance Black about the importance of Harvey Milk.

For the 5th year in a row Moscow Gay Pride was banned by Mayor Yury Luzhkov. According to him it is satanic and he will do everything to stop the event May 29. Moscow authorities have also blocked the website promoting the pride, GayRussia.Ru. How democratic.

There might come an end to the FDA approved ban on gays giving blood donations. The Department of Health and Human services wants to hear presentations and engage in deliberations on the topic. Since september 1985 men who had sex with men(even once) were not allowed to donate. This change would be about time, there are tons of monogamous gay men who are HIV-negative and can donate.

Johnny Weir does Lady Gaga

2 of my favorite thing merged together. After doing Poker Face last year, last month in St Petersburg Johnny did Bad Romance.

U.S and Italy in Fed cup final

26 04 2010

The defending champion Italy played with 2 of my favorites Flavia Pennetta and Francesca Schiavone. They beat Czech Republic with Kvitova and Hradecka with 5-0 Italy’s top ladies always play and that is what makes them good, year after year.

From the other 2 semi-final teams you cannot say they had their best players. U.S beat Russia 3-2. The U.S missed the Williams sisters but both Melanie Oudin and Bethanie Mattek Sands won one single and great team Mattek/Huber on the decisive double. Russia had Dementieva who won 2 matches but Makarova and Kudryavtseva proved very weak.

Belgium on their play-off against Estonia with 3-2 and will stay in the world group. Unfortunately both Clijsters and Henin got injured though, Clijsters will likely be out for  6 weeks and might miss Roland Garros. Flipkens and Wickmayer would have probably won it without the 2 stars.

Olympics, wednesday and thursday

26 02 2010

Wednesday was not such a good day for the speed skating but it was known that the 5k would be the weakest distance fo the dutch ladies. Jorien Voorhuis ended in 10th place and Elma de Vries was number 11. The winner was the best woman for years on this distance, Martina Sablikova. Germany’s Stephanie Beckert was 2 but the difference between 1/2 was very small. Maybe next year it will be Beckert at number 1. She has made huge progress in the last 2 years. Canada’s Clara Hughes won the bronze at her 5th Olympics(summer as a bicyclist included) Today will be the start of the men’s and women’s pursuit. The dutch men are clear favorites with probably Korea and Norway as the numbers 2 and 3. U.S has a small chance for a medal. The dutch ladies had a horrible draw and have to face Germany first and title favorite Canada next if they beat Germany. I think Canada will win, Russia will be 2 and Germany or the Netherlands will end with the bronze.

With the skiing there has been a lot of talk between the catfight of American’s Lindsey Vonn and Julia Mancuso. Mancuso had complained about Vonn getting almost all media attention and then Vonn fell at the Giant Slalom which resulted in Mancuso having to ski again, after already having completed half of the track and she lost a sure medal in that race. Still I am team Vonn, she seems nicer.

Johnny weir had the perfect comeback after people asked him what he though about the reporters that said boys will not be allowed to figure skate because parents are afraid they will turn into Johnny. He thinks kids should only be so lucky as to turn into him. I totally agree with him. He is a two-time Olympian, World Championships medal winner, U.S champion and has his own reality show on the Sundance Channel. Nothing wrong with that.

Olympics day 9,openly lesbian Ireen Wust wins 1500m, another gold for Holland, biathlon

22 02 2010

After the beginning of this week for the speed skater at the Olympics were a little disappointing, since thursday everything changed majorly. 2 Gold, silver and bronze. Wust is a former olympic winner, world and european champion and came out last year. Her form the last 2 season was not always great but she brought it when it mattered most. I was hoping for a medal for her but did not expect gold. The favorite for me was Kristina Groves from Canada and she took home the silver. Martina Sablikova had a phenomenal last round and won the bronze. Wust’s race was perfection, fast opening and also a great last round. Margot Boer from the Netherlands was the number 4 and is pretty unlucky with a 4th, 6th, and 4th place. Both Canadian and Dutch TV pointed out her girlfriend and showed them hugging, NBC of course did not.

At the biathlon it was a great day for the German Girls at the Mass Start, my favorite race. Magdalena Neuner won her second gold medal and Simone Hauswald Denkinger won the bronze. In between them was Russia’s Olga Zaitseva.
